An Archeologist’s View: The Formation of the Synagogue in Ancient Israel – How did it develop and what made it so special?


Dr. Michael Pytlik teaches courses in Anthropology, spe- cializing in the archaeology of Israel, and in Judaic Studies at Oakland University. He has led the study abroad program to Israel since 2009, which is focused on an archaeological field school and tour of the country. His doctoral studies focused on the historical King David through the lenses of archaeology, history, biblical studies and on subsequent narratives about the king. Dr. Pytlik also teaches courses such as mysticism, sacred sites of the Near East and Jerusa- lem, World Religions, and vari- ous courses in Judaic Studies.
