Book Fair: Michigan Authors Spotlight

The Detroit Jewish Book Fair shines the spotlight on some of the area’s most diverse authors including Carol & Alana Blumenstein (KidsRead2Kids Presents... Amazing Tales!), Rabbi Boruch Cohen (Think Outside The Lox: A fresh perspective on Jewish Teachings and Traditions), Lisa Kaplan (Our Family has a Secret: A Children's Book About Addiction in a Jewish Family), and Michael Rosenbaum (University of Michigan Basketball,1960-1989: From Cazzie Russell to the NCAA Title).

Presentations followed by a moderated panel discussion with The J's Lauren Marcus Johnson, Librarian and Assistant Director of Cultural Arts.

About the Authors

Carol Blumenstein, Executive Director of KidsRead2Kids, has an MBA from the Wharton Business School and a BS in Finance and BSE in Electrical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania, where she was a Sharp Fellow and General Motors Scholar. As a mother of five children with learning differences, Carol has immersed herself in interactive ways to learn and grow. Alana Blumenstein, Co-Founder of KidsRead2Kids, is a creative writer (and playful learner!) at heart. A graduate of Oberlin College, Alana holds her BA in Creative Writing with a concentration in Education. She has dedicated the last few years to accessibility in education, by co-creating KidsRead2Kids Magazine, and speaking to international audiences for the benefit of underserved students, teachers, and parents.


Rabbi Boruch Cohen Rabbi Boruch Cohen, originally from the Boston suburbs, earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from a small liberal arts university. He then pursued a career in writing, first as a journalist, later as an aspiring fiction writer. In 1994, after six years of intensive study, he became a rabbi. The essays collected in this book were written over a 25-year period. Rabbi Cohen and his wife live in Oak Park, Michigan. They have four sons and two daughters.


Lisa Kaplan, LMSW, ACSW, CAADC graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a Master of Social Work. She has been in the addiction field for over 30 years, having worked at CARE of Southeastern Michigan as a clinician and as a program coordinator in the Prevention Department. She currently runs the Community Education Department and serves as part of the clinical treatment team at Henry Ford Health Maplegrove Center in West Bloomfield. She is the married mother of two adult daughters.


Michael Rosenbaum is a Detroit-area sportswriter and editor who's covered everything from high school and amateur sports to the Super Bowl and the NCAA Basketball Tournament. He served as columnist and sports editor with the Detroit Jewish News and a sports editor at the Observer & Eccentric newspapers. He's been published by the Detroit Free Press, USA Today, the Lansing State Journal, the Royal Oak Tribune and Hockey Digest . He was also a sports reporter for WABX-FM.
