Explore how Jewish people have dealt with resistance, both violent and non-violent, throughout history. Although the course will not study current conflicts, by considering literary and historical accounts of prior experiences with confrontations and warfare, participants will gain insight into how to think about and wrestle with issues facing the Jewish people today.


Weekly Topics:

(1) War in the Torah: From Avram’s War to Sihon and Og

(2) War in the Nevi’im: Struggle, Conquest & Civil War

(3) The Wars of the Hasmoneans: Who is “Us” and who is “Them”?

(4) The Wars with Rome: Self-Liberation or Self-Destruction?

(5) Martyrdom and Resistance During the Shoah

(6) Israel’s Wars
