New York has given so much wonderful music to the world, from Tin Pan Alley tunesmiths, street corner doo wop groups, Brill Building songwriters, Greenwich Village folkies, Cotton Club swing bands, Broadway musicals, rhythm and blues combos, doo wop and girl groups, rock bands, and more.
You will hear songs from a golden age of New York music, by Sarah Vaughan, Duke Ellington, Ray Charles, the Shirelles, Al Jolson, the Young Rascals, the Lovin’ Spoonful, Bob Dylan, Simon and Garfunkel, Bobby Darin, Billie Holiday, the Drifters, Carole King, and many others. The course will be illustrated with recordings, videos, and live music examples.
