Would you like to develop your understanding of the purpose of emotions as well as learn concrete skills you can start using right away to cope with emotions in a way that will make a challenging situation better (or at the very least not make it worse)? Our upcoming Emotion Skills program is currently accepting applications from young adults aged 16-35 who would like to join us.
We'll be addressing a variety of subjects and answering a variety of questions throughout the course:
Why do we have emotions? What do they do for us?
How can we recognize and describe emotional experiences?
How can we change our body chemistry using distress tolerance skills?
How can we validate emotions with mindfulness strategies?
How can we shift emotional responses using certain techniques?
How can we reduce vulnerability to intense emotions using specific skills?
Program structure:
Once a week for 8 weeks (Wednesday early evenings)
90 minute sessions (4:30pm to 6:00pm)
Beginning June 28th, ending August 16th, 2023
In-person at L'Annexe (on the 2nd floor of the YM-YWHA at 5400 Westbury Ave.)
Who is it for? Anyone who is interested in learning more about emotions in general, getting in touch with their emotions, and learning new strategies to manage big emotions
In this program, we will be learning both how to “dial up” or connect with emotions (for people who may feel disconnected or alienated from their emotional experiences) as well as how to “dial down” emotions (for people whose emotional experiences feel all-consuming and/or out-of-control, impact their ability to focus or complete daily tasks, and/or lead to emotional reactions that make challenging situations even worse).
