Heavenly Bodies, Terrestrial Time: Exploring Astronomy in the Hebrew Calendar

Hosted by

Rosh Hashanah marks the beginning of a new year, a new month, and the High Holidays- but have you ever wondered what determines these ever-changing dates? Join the Museum of Jewish Montreal to find out, with a night of festive stargazing and astronomical exploration.

Led by Plateau Astro’s Trevor Kjorlien and former micrograntee daph ben david, visitors will be taken on a guided walk through the Plateau to learn about the relationship between the planetary movements, the Jewish new year and the Hebrew calendar.

Together we will investigate the rituals which have guided the marking of Jewish time for thousands of years, how those rituals have transformed, and why their importance persists. The walk will conclude in Parc Jeanne Mance where visitors will be invited to explore the night sky by telescope.

Please note that space is limited. Please indicate any mobility restrictions or accessibility needs during registration, or contact us directly at [email protected].

About Our Speakers:

Trevor Kjorlien is a Space Educator who runs Plateau Astro, a small company in Montréal dedicated to teaching people about space, astronomy, and culture.

daph ben david (they/them) is a gender/queer educator, activist, stage manager, aspiring rabbinical student, and proud Montrealer. They have taught social justice to Jewish teens, worked as a substitute and History teacher in public schools, and taught community workshops on topics ranging from anti-pipeline activism in Canada to transness in the Jewish tradition. Lately, daph has been focusing on bridging their activism and healing work with Jewish practice, personally and in community, especially through art and liturgy.
