In this captivating portrait, author Michael Shnayerson sets out not to absolve gangster Bugsy Siegel of his crimes, but rather to understand him in all his complexity. In a brief life that led to a violent end, Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel rose from poverty to ill‐gotten riches. Born in 1906 to Ukrainian Jewish immigrants and raised on the Lower East Side, Siegel would build a kingdom of his own making in Las Vegas that ultimately led to his demise in 1947. Along the way he would gain and lose a fortunate, befriend some of the most famous actors in Hollywood and infamous gangsters of his time, and may have been responsbile for numerous murders.
