In honour of our Black Jewish community members, we want to celebrate Black History Month together. The program will feature experiences & performances from here in Canada, and in connection to Israel.
Confirmed Speakers & Performers
-June Girvan, Founder of J'nikira Dinqinesh Education Centre - Every Child is Sacred, and acting president of Black History Ottawa Black History Ottawa
-Yaffa Tegegne B.C.L/LL.B, a lawyer and human rights advocate with an innate passion for public service. Social justice is in her blood, quite literally; Yaffa is the daughter of Baruch Tegegne, z”l, the Ethiopian Jewish community leader and activist credited with initiating the Aaliyah of Ethiopian Jewry to Israel
-Tema Smith, Director of Professional Development at 18Doors (formerly InterfaithFamily), and a contributing columnist at The Forward; building a meaningful and inclusive Jewish community through research, training, writing and relational engagement work.
-Nissim Black, an African American Hasidic Jew who brings sharp beats and hook-filled rhymes to the masses.
-Rabbi Sandra Lawson, incoming inaugural Director of Racial Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Reconstructing Judaism. A rabbi, an activist, a public speaker, and a musician.
